Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology Visits Obuasi Mine

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology of Ghana has undertaken a working visit to the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine as part of Parliament’s oversight mandate to assess regulatory compliance and responsible mining practices within the country’s mining sector.

The delegation, led by the Ranking Member of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Hon. Prof. Hamza Adam, said the visit was aimed at ensuring strict adherence to environmental regulations and approved operational procedures, in line with Parliament’s commitment to promoting safe, responsible, and sustainable mining nationwide.

Welcoming the Committee, Managing Director of the Obuasi Mine, Ing. Samuel Pobee provided an overview of the Mine’s operations and highlighted key initiatives driving socio-economic development in Obuasi and its host communities.

He also outlined the Mine’s pioneering 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), which has attracted national interest and is currently being studied and replicated by other institutions. Ing. Pobee further emphasized the Mine’s efforts to diversify the local economy beyond mining through targeted agro-economic initiatives and skills development programmes designed to support sustainable livelihoods.

Following a site tour, members of the Committee commended the Obuasi Mine for its contributions to local development and its demonstrated commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible mining. The Committee also shared recommendations with management on strengthening and sustaining progress made in environmental performance.

Members of the Obuasi Mine Site Leadership Team were present and actively participated in the engagements.
